In 1976 Hellenic Chronicle publisher Peter Agris and a group of liked-minded friends formed the Alpha Omega Council. Alpha Omega Council is a non-profit philanthropic organization, based in Boston, with a mission to promote patriotism to the United States and to cultivate the ideals of Hellenism by supporting various scholarly, athletic, medical, charitable, scientific, literary, religious and educational activities throughout New England and across the United States.

Alpha Omega also fosters fellowship amongst its members, philhellenes, the greater Hellenic community and the next generation of Greek Americans. Each year, the Council recognizes through its Honors Gala the achievements of particular individuals and organizations who have excelled in their endeavors from the worlds of government, business, philanthropy, and the arts and sciences. The Council also administers and presents the Peter Agris Memorial Journalism Scholarships to young Greek Americans preparing for careers in journalism – one of the cornerstones of democracy.

Since 1984, the Council has promoted the Hellenic roots of the Boston Marathon race by hosting the Greek Consulate General in Boston’s Annual Wreath Ceremony. The tradition was initiated through Council efforts and the wreaths to crown the winners of the Boston Marathon come from Greece and are presented to the Boston Athletic Association. In the wake of the 2013 bombings at the Boston Marathon, the Council developed and launched educational programming for middle school educators and students, including essay contests, classics lectures, and Museum of Fine Arts and State House tours, to promote appreciation of the traditions of civic responsibility and defense of liberty that the ancient Greeks demonstrated at the Battle of Marathon. Since its inception in 1976, the Alpha Omega Council has raised, donated and pledged more than $3 Million to various charities and sponsorships.
